Every hour in South Africa 5 people will suffer from a heart attack and 10 people will have strokes according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa (Byrne, Eksteen and Crickmore, 2016). According to them, heart disease and stroke are the biggest killers in South Africa after HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (excluding deaths linked to COVID infection over the last two years). This is confirmed in the latest Stats South Africa Mortality report of 2017. What makes matters worse, is that 80% of premature deaths (<60 years of age) can be avoided by a healthy diet, regular exercise and non-smoking.
Yet despite many awareness campaigns, cardio-vascular disease (CVD) as a broad category, remains the leading cause of mortality in South Africa. More individuals die from CVD than all of the cancers combined. This is mostly due to the rise in cardio-vascular risk factors such as a sedentary lifestyle with urbanisation, smoking, obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol levels. In order to effectively control and reduce the burden of CVD disease, South African healthcare workers must unite in introducing preventive measures to limit the risk factors for CVD in their patients.
This course will provide you with the knowledge and tools to effectively diagnose and manage the risk factors as well as the treatment of CVD disease in your patients.
