Introduction

Health care decisions are based not only on clinical and technical grounds but also on ethical grounds. Although we carefully weigh the clinical and technical aspects, ethical issues involved may be overlooked (WHO).

Medical professionalism is highlighted in this course with examples of professional misconduct rendering a doctor liable for disciplinary action as well as the impact of ethical issues on professionalism.

Integrated measures to ensure the protection of the human rights of people affected by various health issues and circumstances with guidance on the refugee’s rights to health.

This course aims to develop the participant’s understanding of these controversial matters for public health and health professionals.

Course Design

This is an on-line CPD/CME package and materials are presented in the form of video tuition and reading materials. Participants have access to all available courses for a 12-month period from the date of enrolment for the package.

Designed to give students a rapid overview of the discipline of ethics, professionalism, and human rights and four key focus areas namely medical ethics, human rights, public health, and refugee health.

Course Content

The FPD CPD/CME online education package consists of four short courses which include:

Medical Ethics

Designed to cover key constituents' parts of medical ethics including rights and responsibilities, ethical-legal frameworks, beginning and end-of-life, governance, and healthcare.

Medical Professionalism

Designed to explore the concepts of medical professionalism and how they might be applied in various settings including altruism and commitment to patient interests, physician self-regulation and maintenance of competence, civic engagement, relevance to today/ tomorrow.

Human Rights and Public Health

Designed to enable readers to be able to understand the importance of human rights to public health and examples of areas where the relationship is particularly important or vulnerable - humanitarian crises, reproductive health, universal health care and the provision of health services, as well as introducing some of the legal aspects of Human Rights.

Refugee Health

Designed to provide information on the threats to the health of refugees and asylum seekers and canvass potential methods to help improve the situation including the problem, details of health effects on refugees, models of healthcare for settled refugees, politics and the action that can be taken.

Assessment

Participants are assessed on the self-study component of each course through means of a multiple-choice questionnaire.

Accreditation

Each separate course within the CPD/CME package is accredited according to the HPCSA Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals for 8 Ethical CEU’s on Level 2. Providing a total of 32 ethical CEU’s for completing the whole package.

Certification

To qualify for a CPD certificate of completion for each course, participants should successfully complete the online assessment process and work through all resources and videos provided.
