Introduction

Public Health Economics is the science and art of supporting decision-making as to how society can use its available resources. One main task of health economists is to conduct economic and impact analyses of health issues, health care interventions, and health policies.

This course addresses the public policies and best practices in areas such as development, demography, epidemiology, household finance and behaviour, cost/effectiveness of treatments, financing modes, health system organization, and comparative country studies.

By the end of this course, students will be able to understand how healthcare is organized and financed, how healthcare consumers make choices, how different treatments and services can be evaluated and prioritized, and how health systems can best cope with challenges.

Course Design

This is an eLearning course and materials are presented in the form of video tuition and reading materials. Participants have access to all available resources for a 3-month period from the date of registration.

Course Content

There are five topics to complete, which include:

  1. An introduction to health economics.
  2. Health and Socio-Economic Development.
  3. Healthcare Financing.
  4. Introduction to Economic Evaluation.
  5. Health system efficiency and national health priorities.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of how objectives such as equity and efficiency apply to health care in the setting in which you live or work.
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the relationships between economic development and health; household and national income and other socio-economic determinants of health; the concept of equity.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding to discuss the role of various forms of health financing and health insurance, with relevance to developing Countries.
  • Demonstrate a critical awareness of the use and methodological aspects of Cost-Effective Analysis, Cost-Utility Analysis, and Cost-Benefit Analysis.
  • Critically assess the factors contributing to a well-performing health system and assess the performance of the health system in your own country.

Assessment

Participants are required to successfully complete the five online multiple-choice questionnaire’s, a final assignment and obtain a pass mark of 70%.

Accreditation

This course is valued at 15 Credits as part of the Master of Public Health (MPH) (NQF Level 9, 180 Credits, SAQA ID: 117086). The MPH may be achieved in part through Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) up to 70%. Should you successfully complete this course, you can apply for CAT, should you be accepted to the Master of Public Health.

Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for 30 Ethical CEU’s on Level 2.

Certification

To obtain a certificate of completion participants are required to work through all materials and resources provided as well as successfully complete the assessment process.

Course Duration

Participants have access for a 3-month period. It will take approximately 5 weeks to work through all materials and resources provided as well as complete the assessment process.
