Introduction

Disasters are serious disruptions of the environment and impact severely on affected communities and their available resources. The impact could be very severe for vulnerable people who do not have the infrastructure or means to cope with the disaster. Disaster management is the way to deal with and address the risks and environmental impacts of the disaster.

Disaster Management guides emergency planners to not only focus on the scenario of disaster but more importantly anticipate and focus on the consequences of a disaster. Priorities for a coordinated health program and critical emergency relief measures are some of the highlights in the course.

This short course addresses the concepts and processes of emergency planning and management of disasters within a developing world context. By the end of this course, students will be able to assess the hazards and address them to help reduce the risks of a disaster occurring.
