Introduction

Sexual health and the ability to reproduce constitute core components in an individual’s physical and psychological well-being. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are among the most common health conditions in the world with at least one million new infections each day. Understanding the transmission dynamics, clinical presentation and treatment of these infections is essential to provide quality care to all individuals presenting with genital tract symptoms. This short course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to diagnose and manage the often stigmatised conditions linked to diseases associated with sexual activity. STIs have been shown to increase the risk of HIV transmission. In the South African context with high rates of PLHIV, it is therefore of vital importance that all clinicians are up to date with the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of STIs.

Who Should Enrol

All Health Care Providers and Clinicians that have identified the need to update their knowledge regarding STIs and dealing with patients presenting with symptoms and signs of the genital tract.

Course Content

There are 4 modules included in this course:

  1. Anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive system
  2. History taking and clinical examination of a patient with STIs.
  3. Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of STIs.
  4. Syndromic Management of Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, a learner should be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive system.
  • Illustrate essential skills to obtain a sexual history and to examine a patient with presumed STI.
  • Describe the pathophysiology, diagnosis and holistic management of a patient presenting with presumed STI.
  • Discuss and evaluate the syndromic management approach to treatment of a patient presenting with presumed STIs.

Assessment

Participants are assessed on the self-study component of the course through means of a multiple-choice questionnaire for each module and a pass mark of 70% is required.

Course Duration

Participants have 3 months from date of registration to complete the assessment component.

Accreditation

Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for 30 Clinical CEU’s on Level 2.

Certification

To qualify for the certificate of completion for this short course, participants should complete the self-study component and successfully pass the assessment.
