Introduction

It is the responsibility of all healthcare workers to have a healthcare waste management system in place or to have access to such a system. This system should deal completely with measures for waste reduction, separation, packing, labelling, storage, and removal under circumstances that do not threat human health or the environment. Contamination with healthcare waste should be avoided during routine investigations as well as emergency situations. Independent practitioner should be able to provide evidence of compliance with an acceptable protocol for the management of healthcare waste as guidelines stated by the HPCSA. 

 

This course will provide the healthcare worker with guidance in healthcare waste management and look at legislation and regulations that frames the management of healthcare waste.

3. Classification of Healthcare Waste.

4. Sources of Healthcare Waste.

5. Legislation and Regulation of Healthcare Waste.

6. Principles of Healthcare Waste Management.

7. Planning and the Process for Healthcare Waste Management.

8. Healthcare Worker Safety in Management of Healthcare Waste.

9. Challenges in Healthcare Waste Management.

10. Healthcare Waste Management in the Context of COVID-19.

Assessment

Participants are assessed by means of multiple-choice questionnaires at the end of each module. In order to be successful a pass rate of 70% is required.

Accreditation

Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for 23 Clinical CEU’s on Level 2.

Certification

FPD will award successful participants with a certificate on completion of this course should they successfully complete the assessment process.
