Introduction

As the healthcare industry evolves due to global driving forces the doctor will increasingly be challenged with making business decisions without compromising professional ethics. This course is intended to provide participants with an appreciation of the need for continual reflection on the ethical dimension of medicine and how to deal with ethical issues in their practices.

Course Design

This is an online course. Participants have 3 months to complete the assessment process from date of registration.

Course Content

The following modules will be covered:

  • Introduction to ethics
  • Ethics in healthcare
  • Cornerstone ethical principles/values in current healthcare
  • Ethics and the law

Learning Outcomes

After completion of this learning experience, students should be able to:

  • understand the meaning of “ethics” in general and as it manifests in the healthcare environment in particular
  • understand the principled underpinnings of ethics in healthcare (the situation in South Africa is explained as an example of the complexity of the subject)
  • understand the relationship between ethics and law, in general, and between ethics and human rights in particular
  • understand the importance of human rights values in healthcare ethics and how to apply these in concrete situations faced by healthcare practitioners
  • understand the complexity of ethical dilemmas
  • recognise ethical issues in healthcare management and follow a systematic approach in dealing with such issues
  • understand what it means to obtain the informed consent of a patient and how to facilitate obtaining consent in a healthcare practice
  • draft a basic consent form
  • apply the confidentiality principle in practical situations that arise in everyday healthcare practice and apply the exceptions thereto
  • understand and apply the ethical rules in their relationships with other professionals and entities

Accreditation

Accredited according to HCPSA's Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals for 9 Ethical CEU's on Level 2.

Certification

To qualify for a certificate of completion for this short course, participants should successfully complete the assessment process. Your CPD certificate will be generated to your online CPD Manager, upon completion.
