Introduction

South Africa is committed to attaining the UNAIDS 909090 targets to control the HIV epidemic. This is done through quality comprehensive health services and use of highly effective antiretroviral treatment (ART). The ART NDOH program’s main goal is to attain and maintain viral suppression, which will decrease morbidity and mortality from HIV as well as improve the quality of life for clients living with HIV. This course aims to give an update on the management of ART management.

Professional nurses who want to upscale their knowledge on NIMART and have completed the NIMART Course in the past.

Learning Outcomes

Once you have completed all the learning activities for this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the magnitude of HIV, TB and STIs as public health challenges.
  • List key strategies for prevention and management of HIV, TB and STIs.
  • Identify patients that are eligible for ART, TB treatment and STI treatment.
  • List DS-TB and DR-TB treatment modalities.
  • Manage HIV patients on ART and those not on ART.
  • Manage HIV complications.
  • Monitor HIV, TB and STI patients on treatment.
  • Describe monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for HIV, TB and STIs.
  • Describe the role of SANAC in the fight against HIV, TB and STI.

Course Design

This is an e-Learning course.

Course Content

There are 11 modules in this course: 

  1. NIMART as part of the Management Of HIV, STI and TB. 
  2. TB & HIV: preventative, promotive, diagnostic, curative and rehabilitative. 
  3. Administration of different ART regimens and follow-up.
  4. Update on HIV and TB Co-infection.
  5. Preventative Therapy.
  6. ART Regimens for adults and adolescent’s 1st line regimens.
  7. ART Regimens for Neonates, Infants and Children <15 years.
  8. ART Follow-up. 
  9. Monitoring ART.
  10. Switching ART regimens.
  11. Adherence to treatment.

Assessment

Participants are assessed by means of multiple-choice questionnaires at the end of each module. In order to be successful, a pass rate of 50% is required.

Certification

FPD will award successful participants with a certificate on completion of this course should they successfully complete the assessment process.
