Introduction

Welcome to the Introduction to Palliative Care for Registered Nurses learning program. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines palliative care as ‘an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering using early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial, and spiritual’ (WHO: 2020).

We trust you will find the program interesting and most importantly that you would learn something that you can apply in practice to lessen the suffering and improve the quality of life of people living with end-of-life diseases and their families – from diagnosis to death and beyond as bereavement care.
