Introduction

Early identification of foetal anomalies through obstetric ultrasound scanning provides rapid and essential assistance to all clinicians. It has become an essential tool in the diagnosis, management and treatment of all relevant patients. This course is designed to educate delegates in Level 1 Obstetric Scanning, so that they feel comfortable about the basic obstetrics and gynaecological scans. The delegates will be able to assess foetal growth and recognise basic structural foetal anomalies, as well as be introduced to basic gynaecological scans and anomalies.

Who Should Enrol

This course is appropriate for medical doctors, medical interns and sonographers.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of this course you should be able to:

  • Discuss the capabilities and limitations of ultrasound in the context of medical imagery in general.
  • Recognise normal ultrasound anatomy and pathology and contextualise it as applicable to obstetric ultrasound images.
  • Select and use the most appropriate ultrasound equipment for the required imagery.
  • Describe the criteria to ensure the quality of an ultrasound image.
  • Set the ultrasound equipment correctly for quality images.
  • Describe the patient preparation and positioning required for quality ultrasound images.
  • Orientate the ultrasound image for maximal quality and correctness of diagnosis.
  • Recognise the sectional ultrasound anatomy in the transverse and longitudinal planes.
  • Utilise and apply the Obstetric 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester ultrasound protocol.
  • Implement guidelines in obstetrics complimented by ultrasound images to optimise the clinical management of patients.

Course Content

The following modules will be covered:

  • Basics of ultrasound: Physics, Knobology, and Image optimisation
  • Basic obstetrics scanning: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester
  • Basic female gynaecology scanning
  • Foetal Biometry and growth
  • Some easily recognizable foetal anomalies
  • Foetal well-being

Course Design

Blended learning approach consisting of online teaching & learning as well as a 1-day face to face contact tuition session. Please note the online theoretical component must be completed successfully before the date of practical session.

Accreditation

Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Health Professionals for 23 CEU's on Level 2.

Assessment

Participants will be assessed by MCQs on the theoretical component and practical assessments, both for which a minimum pass mark of 70% needs to be obtained.

Certification

To qualify for the certificate of completion, delegates have to complete and pass the online course content as well as successfully complete the hands-on assessment process.
