The objective of the Sasolmed Medical Trustees Short Learning Programme is to ensure that trustees of the Sasolmed Medical Scheme have the necessary mechanisms of ensuring that trustees have the required knowledge and skills to fulfil their fiduciary duties.

The training programme will aim to ensure that participants have an in-depth understanding of:

  • The legislative environment that applies to medical schemes including the relevant statutory council;
  • The South African healthcare environment and the economics of healthcare;
  • Their fiduciary duties and associated risks and;
  • Interpreting medical scheme financial statements.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this short learning programme the participant will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the real business of a medical scheme (environment of a business landscape)
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the law relating to medical schemes
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of corporate governance in a medical scheme environment
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role, functions and responsibilities of medical aid scheme trustees with regard to health finance, health and corporate governance, fraud, waste and abuse in healthcare.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of medical scheme financial statements


This programme is only accessible to the trustees of the Sasolmed Medical Scheme.


Course Content

The following modules are included in this programme:

  • Module 1- The role of the trustee
  • Module 2- Health Law and Governance
  • Module 3- Politics and Economics of Health Care
  • Module 4- Using clinical data
  • Module 5 - Financial Intelligence
  • Module 6- Risk Management


Participant knowledge will be tested through an e-learning assessment strategy allowing FPD to certify participants who successfully complete the programme as competent.

Understanding of module content will be assessed through multiple choice questions (MCQs) designed to test the participant’s insights around key issues in each module, for which a pass rate of 70% is required


On successful completion of the short learning programme, participants will receive a certificate of completion.
