Introduction

The Coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated how easily high performing employees can slip from working productively under pressure into being inefficient and eventually suffering from burnout and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD). Many South African organisations are used to working in a demanding environment with high pressure and high levels of stress. Not many managers of employees may be consciously aware when “good” stress transitions to the type of stress that leads to inefficiencies and Mental Health issues in the workforce. This holds especially true in a stressful COVID-19 environment where a recent FPD survey among healthcare workers indicated high rates of feeling tired and suffering from burnout.

 

The targeted training interventions in this course will create awareness on key mental health issues both for managers as well as for employees. It deals with common mental health presentations such as anxiety and depression and how to recognise and deal with it. Furthermore, it will define stress, pressure, and burnout, recognising the unique ways they show up in one’s working and personal life. You will be able to evaluate your work and lifestyle to identify opportunities for healing. You will also get valuable strategies to manage the effects of anxiety, self-stigma related to mental health issues, stress, pressure, and burnout. By the end of the module, you will have a clearer understanding of how these forces affect you—and what you can do about it.

All managers and employees having to cope with a stressful working and personal environment such as the COVID-19 pandemic and its ramifications on our life in general.

Learning Outcomes

On achieving this course, a learner will be able to:

  • Evaluate your work and lifestyle to identify opportunities for healing.
  • Apply strategies to manage the effects of common mental health issues such as anxiety, stress, pressure and burnout.

Course Content

The following topics are included in this course:

  • Topic 1: What is mental health and what are the signs to look out for with common mental health issues
  • Topic 2: What is self-stigma
  • Topic 3: Dealing with stress, pressure and burnout

Course Duration

The content takes 2 hours to complete in total, participants are provided with access to complete the course in a maximum of one month.

Course Design

This is a part-time distance (e-learning) self-study course with interactive and reflective content, including videos and activities.

Assessment

Participants are required to work through the multimedia content, complete the associated activities and assessment questions after each topic and obtain a cumulative pass mark of 50%.

Certification

FPD will award successful participants with a certificate of completion after obtaining a minimum cumulative average of 50% on the assessment.
